Changing body image over time

Although the American public are on average increasing their body weight, 'Miss America' contestants have been thinner over time and winners since 1970 have consistently weighed less than the other contestants. In 1975 top models and beauty queens weighed only 8% less than the average women. Today they weigh 23% less, a size achievable by less than 5% of today's female population. Between 1970 and 1990, there was an overall increased emphasis on weight loss and body shape in the content of a popular women's magazine, as well as a shift to using thinner less curvaceous models in their photo shoots. The 1980s beauty ideal remained slim but required a more toned and fit look. Women could no longer just 'diet' into the correct size; there was a new pressure to achieve the toned look. The 1990s body ideal was the very slim but large breasted look, a rather unrealistic and almost impossible combination for most western women....

Natural breast forum

A few people have been asking where Eve's place is and the answer is that it's the natural breast forum you have probably already heard of, which Eve has taken over.

Today's body image

The modern way of looking at body image is to see the ideal as terribly slim with big boobs, despite the fact that for most women this is an impossible combination.

Body image thought for the day

It has been estimated that young women see more images of beautiful women in one day than their mothers saw through their entire adolescence

Body Image for children

I work in a shop and a little girl comes in. The father comes up to me and joked about all the money he was spending. "Your money disappears when you take a girl to a mall," he said. I laughed and nodded. He started talking to me about how much money his 11 year old daughter cost him and told me that at the beginning of the school year he spent $300 on Lancome makeup. For those who don’t know, Lancome is an expensive French line sold at department stores and definitely not marketed for girls under 18.

Body Image

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Your perception of how your body looks forms your body image. Interestingly, a perfectly-toned 20 year old fitness model could have a very poor body image, while an average-shaped 50 year old man or woman could have a great body image. Regardless of how closely your actual figure resembles your perception, your body image can affect your self-esteem, your eating and exercise behaviors, and your relationships with others.

The Media and Body Image

Advertising often emphasises the importance of physical attractiveness, but this places undue pressure on women to focus on their appearance. In recent survey by Teen People magazine, 27% of girls felt that the media pressures them to have a perfect body, and a poll conducted in 1996 by the international ad agency Saatchi and Saatchi found that ads made women fear being unattractive or old. Advertising may adversely impact women's body image, which can lead to unhealthy behaviour as women strive for the ultra-thin body idealised in the media. Advertising images have also been recently accused of setting unrealistic ideals for males, and men and boys too are beginning to risk their health to achieve the well-built media standard.
